Don & Mia’s Story

Before there was a business, a brand, or a single client, there was just a kid who couldn't walk past an animal without wanting to care for it. Ducklings in the tub. Chicks in a crate. Rabbits in the shed. Tadpoles and frogs in the pond. Don grew up knowing that animals weren't just pets, they were a responsibility, a relationship, and a calling.

When his family's home was broken into during his teenage years, his father came home one day with a German Shepherd. That dog changed everything. Don started volunteering at local shelters, enrolled in Canine Training School, and never really looked back.

What followed was a career built one dog at a time. Don managed a full-service kennel, owned and operated a pet food distributorship, and served as Sales Director for Ed Beckman's School of Dog Training, one of the most respected institutions in the field. He trained alongside K-9 Patrol Dogs in the City of Yonkers, an experience that gave him a level of understanding of canine behaviour that most trainers never encounter — fieldwork that taught him how to read people and dogs together while working toward a command, and how to keep his own emotions in check, because anxiety travels straight from the handler down the leash into the dog. It's a lesson that still shapes every training session he leads today. Along the way, he became trained in canine CPR, learned to administer oral, topical, and insulin medications, and became a proud member of the Humane Society and Pet Sitters Associates LLC, not because it was required, but because it reflected who he already was.

Mia came into the picture with her own set of strengths. She had a degree in Business Administration and a genuine love for animals that matched Don's own. She came up working alongside Don at Lone Pine Kennels as a Kennel Assistant, learning the work from the ground up. Over 25 years, she grew into every corner of the business — pet sitting, house sitting, puppy crate training, medication administration, and the day-to-day operations and finances that keep The Doggie Tutor running smoothly. While Don is in the field with the dogs, Mia is the steady force making sure everything works.

Together, they bring over 55 years of combined experience to every family they serve. Some of those families have been with them for over 14 years through new puppies, ageing dogs, house moves, and everything in between. That kind of loyalty doesn't come from a service. It comes from a relationship.

Don doesn't spend much time worrying about the larger franchise trainers, walkers, and sitters that have popped up in the area. He sees competition as a healthy thing, and he's clear-eyed about the trade-offs of running a smaller, hands-on outfit instead of a big brand. What he focuses on instead is going the extra mile, whether that's a full dog training program in New York, a dog walking route in New York, or simply making sure a nervous dog gets the attention it needs on a given day.

More than 30 years in, Don will tell you the job feels the same as it always has. Ask him what he'd want a prospective family to know, and he'll tell you simply that he values the chance to help — and wants every owner to know their pet is in very good hands.
